Competing ebook reader selections Print E-mail
By Randall McBrendanson

Our ebook reader evaluation makes the task of deciding which to buy easy by detailing the main features of the major competing models. The market for e-readers has settled into three different classes, premium, midrange, and value, which we've separated below. With the huge range of selection from several manufacturers and stores, weve carefully selected the most well-reviewed in each category for our e-reader comparison.

The premium ereader category are the Cadillac of the e-reader market and are definitely what youre looking for if you want the nicest ebook reader available. Plenty of features like big screens, 3G and wireless plus ample storage space, if you want to invest in a top quality product to make use of for a long time, this is the category you want.

Our choice was the Nook Color as the number one premium ereader.
One of the benefits of the high-end group of ereaders is added features such as color touchscreens and internet functionality. Anywhere theres a wireless connection you can browse all the content of your favourite news sites, forums and blogs. The GUI is fast and easy to navigate, and its automatically linked to the Barnes & Nobles electronic book store. And on account of the vivid color screen, visually stunning pieces like photographic works or graphic novels can be viewed wherever you go.

Moving on to the midrange ebook reader group, here you can find the more standard ebook readers. Clearly the best selling of all categories, they are versatile enough to meet a wide range of users needs and are less expensive than premium models. Theyre also easier to carry and have longer battery life.

Our choice was the Amazon Kindle 3G as the top midrange ereader. Theres a reason Amazon's Kindle is the best selling e-reader ever. Its high contrast E-Ink screen is gentle on the eyes for browsing through pages even in bright sunlight, it is built to be light and portable and its battery life is fantastic. If you are looking to stock up on new releases and bring it along with you for a holiday at the beach, you likely wont even have to bring your charger! Better still, if you are lacking time and cant grab all the ebooks you wanted, the 3G will work free of charge just about anywhere in the world to connect to the digital store. And new to this third gen Kindle, you can use the WiFi connection for surfing the web also. Everyone knows the Amazon Kindle brand name, find out for yourself.

Lastly we go over the value ebook reader group. If you dont need all the fancy added features, prefer a device thats much more lightweight and are glad to spend less money doing so, the budget e-reader class is for you. Several of this category are lacking wifi connectivity, a music player, or large amounts of storage, but if you only want a basic e-reader, no need to look further.

Our choice was Sony's Pocket Reader as the best budget ebook reader. Sonys latest update to the Pocket Edition is a great example of how large things can come in small packages; the Sony Pocket Edition is the lightest ebook reader currently available. The Pocket Reader is also widely available at several retailers so the cost is really reasonable for a name brand, well received e-reader. While it has no wireless connectivity or music player, as an ebook reader it's fantastic.
